Librarian Eun Soo (Yoo jin) is furious when she sees a young man, Jun Oh (Lee Dong-Wook), tearing pages from books. She angrily confronts Jun Oh and ends up hearing a very curious story. The story takes place in an alternative Tokyo which has taken a different history. In the fictional capital Teito, where the aristocrats continue to thrive since the 19th Century , there is a wide gap between the rich and the poor. The aristocrats own 90% of the wealth in the capital. In the city, there are rumors about a mysterious thief , who only steals from the rich with incredible ways like magician. People call him K-20, that's short for "Kaijin Niju-Menso" (the Phantom Thief with 20 faces).Endo Heikichi (Kaneshiro Takeshi) is a circus acrobat. One day, he is deceived by a mysterious old man, and arrested as K-20. The old man turns out to be K-20 himself.Heikichi succeeds to escape from the jail, and he decides to hunt down the real K-20 to prove his innocence.Meanwhile, K-20 sets his eyes on a rich lady, Hashiba Yoko (Matsu Takako), whose fiance is Akechi Kogoro (Nakamura Toru) who is a famous detective and once arrested Heikichi. Heikichi happens to help Yoko, who is chased by K-20. He somehow convinces Yoko and Kogoro that he is not the real K-20. He begins to fight against K-20 with Yoko and Kogoro, with his courageousness and incredible physical dexterity.

Set near the end of the Goryeo era (AD 918 ~ 1392), Korea was politically manipulated by the Yuan Dynasty in China. The ambitious King of the Goryeo Dynasty organizes Kunryongwe, as his royal guards and escorts. HONG Lim, the commander of Kunryongwe, captivates the King of Goryeo, and the Queen keeps her eyes on the relationship between HONG Lim and the King with a reluctant view.Meanwhile, the bilateral relations between Goryeo and the Yuan gets worse as Yuan demands to install the cousin of the King as the Crown Prince of Goryeo, attributing to the fact that there is no heir sired by the King. Forever Enthralled follows the life of Mei Lanfang, one of China's premiere opera performers. Known during production as Mei Lanfang, the film's English title was changed in November 2008, shortly before its release, to Forever Enthralled.The film made its international premiere by shown in competition at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received positive responses, with critics calling it a "sumptuous" film.

The film open in the early 20th century with Mei Lanfang ,widely regarded as one of the most legendary opera performers in all of Chinese history. Though a male, Lanfang built his reputation on the basis of outstanding performances as female characters, and in fact lived out his private life buckling under the weight of repressed emotions. Kaige structurally divides the epic into segments. The film commences with a 70-minute sequence that depicts Mei's reaction to a letter from his uncle, cautioning him against the dangers of an operatic career; in the years that follow, Mei recoils from social rules that severely restrict his actions. The narrative then moves forward in time by a decade, to a point where Mei has somehow managed to bound over the said limitations and establish himself as the single most popular opera star in all of China. Conflict lingers, however - present in Mei's repeated onstage duels with the performer Swallow 13 (an apocryphal character who represents a composite of several real-life figures), whose style is the polar opposite of his own. Kaige then moves ahead in time to explore Mei's efforts to juggle a second marriage to Fu Zhifang (Hong Chen) and his relationship with his manager, Oju Rubai (Sun Honglei), whose passion for Mei's onstage craft (and, possibly, a desire for Mei himself) know no bounds.
